Oosterweelverbinding Antwerp

C-concrete is supplying precast finishing elements for the “Dive Under” sub-area, part of the large-scale Oosterweelverbinding in Antwerp. With the edge and wall elements produced for this infrastructure zone, C-concrete demonstrates that precast concrete can serve not only a structural purpose but also an architectural and aesthetic function, even within the most complex infrastructure environments.

Custom edge and wall elements

For the Dive Under sub-area, at exit R1 towards the AFAS Dome, C-concrete is responsible for the production and delivery of the Dive Under edge and wall elements. These aesthetic precast elements give the infrastructure zone a polished, architectural look, thanks to coloured concrete with either a smooth finish or a ribbed texture on the wall elements.

Complex Production & Precision Work

The greatest challenge of this project lay in the combination of complex shapes and large dimensions, as elements weighing up to 20 tonnes had to be produced and positioned with utmost precision. Dimensional accuracy, finish, and design were crucial, in a testament to craftsmanship where precast concrete proves both its technical and visual added value.

Background information

La zone Dive Under se situe au niveau de l’échangeur d’Anvers-Est (Antwerpen-Oost), où se rejoignent l’E313 et le Ring d’Anvers (R1). À cet endroit, deux flux de circulation se croisaient : le trafic sur le Ring en direction de la sortie Deurne et le trafic en provenance de l’E313 vers les Pays-Bas. Ce mouvement d’entrecroisement générait des situations dangereuses et des ralentissements. La solution réside dans un nouveau passage inférieur, le « dive-under », qui permet au trafic se dirigeant vers la sortie Deurne de passer sous le flux venant de l’E313. Les deux flux de circulation sont ainsi totalement séparés.

The new dive-under is scheduled to open in the summer of 2026 and will initially connect to the Bypass towards the Netherlands. Once the new sunken Ring becomes operational, the underpass will connect to it permanently, ensuring that the traffic flows remain safely separated in the long term.

The Bypass itself is a temporary highway alongside the existing R1, between the Antwerpen-Noord and Antwerpen-Oost interchanges, and features three lanes in each direction. Although this infrastructure is temporary, it paves the way for a permanent improvement: once the sunken Ring is completed, the Bypass will be dismantled, allowing the further development of the Ringparken with space for nature, sports, and community gatherings.
